A veteran Fannin County school bus driver is charged with DUI after overturning his bus in a single vehicle wreck on Mineral Springs Road Wednesday afternoon. Robert Winston Harper, 72, of Mineral Bluff was arrested following the accident and charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane. He was later released from the Fannin County Jail on a $2,300 bond. According to a report filed by Sgt. G.R. Harper of the Georgia State Patrol, Harper’s blood alcohol level at the time of the accident was 0.127 percent.

A 42 year old male was pulled over on Interstate 85 for tossing trash out of his car window.  When police searched his car officers discovered six pounds of methamphetamine.  The meth has a street value of about $350,000. Covarrubias is also wanted on charges in Louisiana. For now, he’s in the Gwinnett County jail, charged with drug trafficking and littering.

An Aiken County man charged with the vehicular deaths of two Georgia men and severely injuring a third has been sentenced to serve 15 years in prison for the December 2007 DUI-related crash in the City of Aiken.

Joey Leverane Brown Jr., 26, of Windsor, pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of felony DUI with death and one count of felony DUI with great bodily injury.

Brown was sentenced to serve 15 years for the death of 40-year-old Johnnie L. Mathis of Augusta, 15 years for the death of 35-year-old Thomas Paul Sellers, also of Augusta, and 12 years for injuring 46-year-old Cleveland Gene Scott of Hephzibah. The years in his sentence will run concurrent with each other. Brown will also be required to pay up to $25,000 in fines and fees.

The fatal crash occurred nearly a year ago, the morning of Dec. 8, when Brown was driving with the three other men on Dibble Road in the City of Aiken. Brown lost control of the vehicle, which then ran off the roadway and overturned during the crash.

The driver and Scott were able to escape from the overturned vehicle before it caught fire, but the other two men did not get out.  Brown was treated for minor injuries and Scott was hospitalized. Mathis and Sellers died in the fire, officials said at the time.

(CBS/AP) A blast which police say was caused by an explosive device killed one person and injured four others at a small-town law firm in northern Georgia. The fatality has not been identified.

Witnesses said the explosion around 10 a.m. blew out the windows at Georgia Personal Injury Law Firm of  McCamy, Phillips, Tuggle & Fordham in Dalton, 26 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tenn.  A Dalton police spokesperson told CBS Affiliate WGCL that there was some sort of altercation at the law office just before the blast.

ATLANTA (AP) — A judge has unsealed some records in Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson’s divorce. Rome Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Walter Matthews took the wraps off the records that had been placed under seal by a Paulding County Superior judge who was also Richardson’s former law partner.

Ethics watchdog George Anderson had sued to have the records unsealed. Richardson’s divorce came after an ethics complaint was filed by Georgia Democrats alleging that the Republican speaker had an “improper relationship” with a female utility lobbyist. The complaint alleged that the relationship took place at the same time Richardson was co-sponsoring a pipeline bill being sought by her employer.  A legislative ethics panel dismissed the complaint.

University of Georgia police arrested a 21-year-old Hoschton man early Sunday when they found him fixing a flat tire while intoxicated and discovered a handgun in his car when they searched, UGA police said.

Officers saw David Ray Dixon fixing his car in the lower Oconee Street parking lot about 12:20 a.m., and they tried to arrest him when he failed a roadside sobriety tests, according to police. Officers handcuffed Dixon and put him in a patrol car while they searched his car, police said, but the man fled and was caught after a short chase. Officers found a .22-caliber revolver in the car, police said.
